MARISELA BARRERA is a slasher: theater director/playwright/arts administrator - and a native of San Juan, a Borderplex town with their own Virgen. Barrera most recently headed the Theater Arts Program at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio, TX. She was Artistic Director with Cara Mia Theatre Co. in Dallas, TX and Education Manager with Dallas Theater Center. She has worked as an elementary school teacher, a go-go dancer, and a fire spinner. Selected directing credits at the Guadalupe include Beautiful Senoritas by Dolores Prida, Posada Magica by Octavio Solis, and Psst...I Have Something To Tell You, Mi Amor by Ana Castillo. Marisela also wrote and directed the world premieres of Milagritos ("Best of Stage 2002" by San Antonio Express News), Confessions of a Southside Karaoke Singer, and Ay, Pedro! with the Guadalupe. Additional San Antonio highlights include performing with Guillermo-Gomez Pea in Jump-Start Theatre's Epcot: El Ala-MALL, directing Anna in the Tropics with San Pedro Playhouse, serving as producer and talent scout for the Imagen Foundation's San Antonio Latino Talent Showcase, and founding and directing TeatroFEST, a city-wide theater arts festival ("Best of Stage 2005" by the San Antonio Express News). Her interest in exploring the Latino experience in the US through theatre is realized through contemporary mediums for storytelling and traditional forms of teatro Chicano. Marisela is a founding member of La Colectiva Performance Group, Borderplex Electronica and Cuento Theater. She has served on review panels with cultural affairs offices in Dallas, Austin and San Antonio and is President-Elect of the San Antonio Theatre Coalition. She has a two-year old daughter, Valentina Inez, and two dogs, Lupe-Pupe and Guera-Perra.
